Eligibility
There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH International General Certificate. Learners should, however, be able to read, understand and explain health and safety concepts in the language used for their course and assessment. NEBOSH recommends a standard of English equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or higher for learners studying in English. This is a language recommendation rather than a requirement to present an IELTS certificate in every case. Duration & Study Modes
The official International General Certificate involves a minimum of 63 taught hours and approximately 40 hours of private study and background reading. Assessment Pattern — GIC1 & GIC2
UNIT 01
GIC1 — Management of Health and Safety
GIC1 is a scenario-based open-book assessment that tests knowledge, analysis and the ability to apply health and safety principles. It includes a closing interview in which the learner may be asked about the submitted work.
UNIT 02
GIC2 — Risk Assessment
GIC2 is a practical assessment in which the learner completes a workplace risk assessment and develops an action plan, demonstrating the ability to identify hazards, evaluate existing controls, recommend improvements and prioritise action.
2026 syllabus update: current unit codes are GIC1 and GIC2. Older materials may still reference IG1 and IG2 — the unit codes from the previous specification.
